It was raining all day long yesterday. By taking advantage of the bad weather, I was able to complete the long novel that I took out from the city library. I’ve known the title but haven’t any idea what the story was.
Japan had surprisingly been developed just in a few decades after the Meiji Restoration. The historical backdrop of the novel was just in the midst of the modernization of Meiji and was based upon the real tragedy occurred at the railroad at the Pass in 1909 (Meiji 42).
The author (1922 – 1999) was born in Asahikawa city in the northland and became a Christian when she was struggling with a disease of her lung. So, they say that the essence of many novels she wrote was on the faith of the devout Christian (Protestant). The best seller book was not an exception, either. I knew from the book’s postscript that the theme of the book came from the Bible, saying “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24).
I was moved a lot to know that such a brave man who sacrificed himself for others a century ago.

明治維新後、日本は驚くべき速さで近代化を遂げました。この小説の時代背景はまさにその明治の近代化の最中にあり、1909年（明治42年）に塩狩峠の鉄道で実際に起きた悲劇に基づいています。
著者の三浦綾子氏（1922-1999）は北国の旭川市に生まれ、肺の病に苦しんでいた時期にキリスト教徒となりました。そのため、彼女が執筆した多くの小説の根底には、敬虔なキリスト教徒（プロテスタント）としての信仰心があると言われています。このベストセラー作品も例外ではありませんでした。巻末のあとがきで知ったのですが、この本のテーマは聖書の「一粒の麦が地に落ちて死ななければ、それはただ一粒のままである。しかし、もし死ねば、多くの実を結ぶ」（ヨハネによる福音書12章24節）という言葉に由来しているとのことでした。
１世紀も前に、他者のために自らを犠牲にしたそのような勇敢な人物がいたことを知り、私は深く感動しました。
