On Nov. 03 (Tue.), the national holiday of “Culture Day”, I attended the event at Otsu Prince Hotel. “Biwaichi” means the bike (cycling) tour around the Lake (Lake Biwa), the largest in Japan. They say that the whole distance is about 200 km (125 miles). The route was selected one of the first national cycle roads in 2018, as the bike course can be proud of towards the world, representing Japan.
The purpose for me was to acquire the basics and what the experts from various standpoints (e.g., an enterprise producer, an officer of the Ministry of tourism, an officer of Shiga tourism bureau) think about the current status and the future. This is why I decided to focus on doing a tour guide for my “Territory” from this year, and this Biwaichi (precisely speaking for only KOHOKU area though) is one of my options, too.
According to their panel talks, a bike tour in Shiga pref. may be prosperous from now, since there are a lot of charms on variety of culture, colorful four seasons, long & deep history and local gastoronomy as well, though some problems to solve still exist.
I know it quite tough to open up such a new field in my unknown hometown area, but I think it may be challenging and rewarding after 9 years from my retirement.

１１月３日（火・祝）の「文化の日」、大津プリンスホテルで開催されたイベントに参加してきました。「ビワイチ」とは、日本最大の湖である琵琶湖を自転車で一周するサイクリングのことです。一周の距離は約200kmに及びます。このルートは2018年、日本を代表し、世界に誇れるサイクリングコースとして、国が指定する「ナショナルサイクルルート」の第一弾の一つに選ばれました。
今回参加した目的は、この取り組みの基礎知識を得ること、そして事業プロデューサー、観光庁や滋賀県観光局の担当者といった、様々な立場にある専門家たちが、現状や将来についてどう考えているのかを知ることでした。というのも、私は今年から自分の「活動拠点」でツアーガイドを始めることに決めており、その候補の一つとして「ビワイチ」（正確には、その中の「湖北」エリアに限定したものですが）についても検討しているからです。
パネルディスカッションによると、滋賀県でのサイクリングツアーには大きな発展の可能性があります。多様な文化、鮮やかな四季、奥深い歴史、そして地域の食といった多くの魅力があるからです。もちろん、解決すべき課題もいくつか残されています。
人々の馴染みの薄い土地でこうした新しい分野を開拓するのはかなり困難なことであることは百も承知ですが、退職して９年間が経過した今、挑戦し甲斐があるのではないかと考えています。
