When non-native speakers of English continue studying the foreign language, they may think why we have to remember so many conventional phrases (formulaic sequencies). This is a justified question for me, too.
According to the author, there are basically 8 reasons, important ones of which are:
1) To tell it exactly
2) To tell it speedy
3) To tell it efficiently
4) To tell it with more suitable words
And then, what are the formulaic sequencies? The author sorts it out into 8 categories as below.
1) Idioms (e.g., beat around the bush)
2) Collocations (e.g., deeply grateful)
3) Binomials (e.g., bride and groom)
4) Compounds (e.g., house husband)
5) Phrasal verbs (e.g., look up to)
6) Institutionalized expressions (e.g., There is no royal road to learning)
7) Sentence frames (e.g., Just because X does not mean Y)
8) Fixed phrases (e.g., conceive of)
From my little experience of learning the language, I have to nod that the more frequently such formulaic sequencies are used, the more natural the sentence becomes.
The author is generous enough to recommend some useful software and websites. I think the book is a very practical good book.
