I borrowed the books from the city library, one was titled “Thus, the old soldier has been disappearing” written by a popular writer Sato Aiko who is now 103 years old. Another one was “Clues in order to live beautifully” written by Kobayashi Teruko who is now 91 years old. The former one was a series of essays by the centenarian who has a “peculiar” common knowledge as she admits it by herself. Another one was, I think, about inspiring words, especially fallen into difficulties in one’s life. Both authors are always active and positive on their lives, even though they have already passed 90 years old.
After reading the books, I remembered 3 elderly women living in our small hamlet whom I happened to meet the day before yesterday when I was doing my daily walking exercise. All of them were my “friends”, since we are buddies in our “Senior Club” of our district. One woman whose age has just reached 96 was doing “walking exercise” with a pushchair since it was comfortably fine day, one whose age was 85 was doing her daily agricultural work, and another one whose age was 88, was going to somewhere with her push chair, too, upon some household errand. All of these women seemed to be very young and healthy for their age.
My friends, be proactive to your life, and let’s go outside, and talk under the sunshine!

市立図書館で本をお借りいたしました。１冊は人気作家の佐藤愛子さん（現在103歳）の「かくて老兵は消えていく」、もう１冊は小林輝子さん（現在91歳）の「美しく生きるヒント」でした。前者は、本人曰く「独特の」常識を持つ著者によるエッセイ集で、後者は、人生の困難に直面した時に心に響く言葉を集めたものだったと思います。お二人とも、もう９０歳を超える年齢なのに常に活動的で前向きな生き方をされています。
これらの本を読んだ後、一昨日、私が日課としているウォーキング中に偶然出会った、私たちの集落に住む３人の女性高齢者たちのことを思い出しました。彼女たちは皆、地区の「シニアクラブ」の仲間たちで、私の「友人」でもあります。 ９６歳になったばかりのある女性は、気持ちの良い天気だったのでベビーカーを押して「ウォーキングエクササイズ」をされていました。また８５歳の別の女性は日課の農作業を、そして８８歳の女性はやはりベビーカーを押して家の用事に出かけていかれるところでした。彼女たちは、例外なく若々しく年齢を感じさせませんでした！
さあ、皆さん、とくに高齢者の皆さん、前向きに人生を歩みましょう！そして外に出て、太陽の下で世間話をいたしましょう！
