Re: “ATAGO” Shinto Festival (愛宕祭)

【In English】

“Atago-shinko faith” is a Shinto faith about fire prevention, which originated at the Atago-jinja Shrine in the southwest of Kyoto City. The Shrine enshrines on the top of Mt. Atago (924 meter high), and is the grand head shrine of 900 schools all over in Japan.

We cannot live without fire. Thanks to fire, we can cook and stay warm. On the other hand, fire is dangerous if treated without care, ….it may burn out our residence, building and rob of people’s lives. So, we have had a firm faith of pasting the Ofudas (paper charms) written “Beware of Fire” (火迺要慎) at our kitchens. The Ofuda has to be replaced with a new one once a year, and today is the day when the Shinto Festival was held at our hometown. (After the ceremony at our community hall and in front of small wayside shrines, the prayed Ofudas will be distributed to each family.)

As I am assigned as the caretaker of Shinto events (and an errand boy at the same time), I had to prepare for the ritual from early in the morning and attended it together with other members of our community.

We cannot be too careful to take precautions against fires!
