Mid-summer has come to Kohoku area, too.
After my small business, I walked around Kinomoto, which was known as a temple town and also as a post station town as well on Hokkoku street from olden days.
I dropped by the Jizo-in temple again today too. They say that the temple was opened in the Asuka Period (the latter half of the 7th century), older than the days of Nara and Heian period. Almost no worshippers there then. (We don’t have to pay any entrance fee.) I have come here for innumerable times so far, but I tried today to look around many Buddhist statues and paintings (which are the temple’s treasures) in the inner parlor of the main hall, much more carefully than ever before. As the result, they seem to be worth watching, though all haven’t necessarily been registered cultural properties.
I suddenly felt that if i were watching now these kinds of treasures at some name-brand destination in Kyoto, I should get mobbed with so many crowds. (We usually have to pay the admission there, though…)
There used to be many inns for tourists and “Honjin” accommodation facility for higher class samurais and court nobles.
The town is also renowned for good Japanese Sake and Soy Sauce, which is made from fermented soy beans. There are 2 famous Sake breweries, both of which has more than 480 years history.
I noticed afresh the town is one of the candidate destinations for KOHOKU Tour.

湖北地方にも真夏がやってきました。
今日、ちょっとした用事を済ませた後、古くから北国街道沿いの門前町・宿場町として知られていた木之本（きのもと）の町を散策しました。
今日もまた、地蔵院に立ち寄りました。この寺は奈良・平安時代よりもさらに古い、飛鳥時代（7世紀後半）に開かれたと伝えられています。訪れたときには参拝客の姿はほとんどありませんでした（拝観料は無料です）。これまで幾度となく訪れてきましたが、今日は本堂の奥の間に安置された数多くの仏像や絵画（これらは寺宝です）を、これまで以上にじっくりと鑑賞してみました。その結果、必ずしもすべてが文化財に指定されているわけではありませんが、どれも一見の価値がある素晴らしいものだと感じました。
ふと、もし京都の有名な観光地でこうした宝物を鑑賞しようものなら、大勢の観光客にもみくちゃにされていただろうな、と思いました（京都では通常、拝観料が必要であるにもかかわらず……）。
かつてこの町には、多くの旅籠（はたご）や、上級武士・公家が利用する「本陣」が軒を連ねていました。
また、この町は美味しい日本酒や醤油の産地としても知られています。有名な酒蔵が2軒あり、どちらも480年以上の歴史を誇ります。
改めて、この町が「湖北ツアー」の目的地としてふさわしい場所の一つだと実感しました。
