The main purpose of visiting the southern region of Kii Peninsula was to attend the “Adventurous tour” around the Kii mountains planned by the Research Forest of HU. Since it takes about 6 hours by JR to get Shirahama sta. from my nearest sta., I had to stay at the resort for 2 nights.
I visited Shirahama area for the first time, and I was a bit surprised to know that there are many sightseeing spots, such as Adventure world and Energy land. But what made me so excited were other spots, i.e., the natural forest of Nanki Kumano mountains, the Senjo jiki (千畳敷) plateaus, the Aquarium attached to KU and the museum of Minakata Kumagush (南方熊楠), a great scholar of natural history and folklore studies. On the 3rd day, I was fully able to enjoy myself to walk around the area for 4.5 hours until the train starts. I was lucky that it was nice weather for 3 days.
I’m sure that this tour must remain forever in my mind.

紀伊半島南部を訪れた最大の目的は、北大研究林が企画した紀伊山地を巡る「アドベンチャーツアー」に参加することでした。最寄り駅から白浜駅まではJRで約6時間かかるため、白浜に2泊することになりました。
私にとっては白浜エリアは初めて訪れるところでしたが、アドベンチャーワールドやエネルギーランドなど、観光スポットがたくさんあることに少し驚きました。しかし、それ以上に私を魅了したのは、南紀熊野の自然林、千畳敷高原、京大付属水族館、そして自然史・民俗学の巨匠である南方熊楠記念館でした。3日目は、列車の出発まで約4時間半、たっぷりと散策を楽しむことができました。3日間とも好天に恵まれたのも幸運でした。
このツアーは、きっと私の心に永遠に残ることでしょう。
