I’ve sometimes got questions from inbound tourists, “Yoshi, what is the difference between Buddhism and Shintoism?” Though I’m a Buddhist (the Zen sect) and our family has kept a Shinto household shrine in our living room, and though I’ve read the Sutra on a routine basis in front of the Buddhist altar or our family tomb, I have to confess that I know nothing about it at all in essentials. That’s one of the reasons why I call myself “a bastard tour guide”, since such a basic stuff must be the minimum knowledge not only for a tour guide of Japan (e.g., more than half destinations are temples or shrines in Kyoto) but also for a Japanese.
The motivation for me to attend the event about “Tan-ni-syo” was not to deepen the famous book but to acquire the “pre-primary” level of the Buddhism.
A booklet I bought at the event (500 JPY) was a good buy for me, …easy to read in larger letters and plain expressions. Some points that I could learn from the reference were as follows.
1) Buddha’s teaching is not difficult but quite simple and reasonable
2) One gets what one deserves (Jigou Jitoku)
Buddha said the reason why you are here now is due to what you have done so far
3) One’s life shall change remarkably when one selects good “EN”
I had never talked smacks of Buddhism so far, but judging from the topic above, I may have aged….(^-^;

タイトル: 仏教についての”いろはのい”
私は時々、訪日外国人観光客から「ヨシさん、仏教と神道の違いは何ですか？」と質問されることがあります。私は仏教徒（禅宗）で、実家は居間には神棚を置いており、仏壇や先祖代々の墓前では当たり前のようにお経を読誦していますが、正直なところ、仏教の基本的なことは全く知りません。だから私は自分のことを「バッタモンのガイド」と呼んでいるのです。何故って、このような基礎知識は、日本のツアーガイド（例えば、京都の観光地の半分以上は寺社仏閣です）だけではなく、日本人にとっても最低限に必要な知識だからです。
私が「歎異抄」に関するイベントに参加した動機は、この有名な書物を深く理解するためではなく、仏教の「初歩」レベルを身につけるためでした。
このイベントで買った小冊子（500円）は、私にとって良い買い物でした。大きな文字で平易な表現でたいへん読みやすかったです。そこから学ぶことができた点は以下の通りです。
1) 仏陀の教えは難解なものではなく、非常に単純で理にかなったものである
2) 人は自分の行いに見合った報いを受けることになる（自業自得）
仏陀は、あなたが今ここにあるのは、あなたがこれまで行ってきたことの結果だと説かれています
3) 良い「縁」を選ぶと、人生はどんどん変わるものである
私はこれまで末香くさい話をすることはなかったのですが、このような話をするようになったことは私も歳を取ってきたせいなのかもしれません…(^-^;
