I’ve performed the guiding for more than 70 times so far after my retirement. At first, I did NOT afford to pay attention at all for touching a relevant Japanese history to a visiting spot, since I used to get the sweats even to arrive at a destination. (I was a terrible guide!) However, I’ve gradually noticed that just adding a historical background about a destination may give guests colorful impression about the site. Here, the important thing is not necessarily a quite detailed matter but a tide of history, e.g., why such a sophisticated culture was nurtured or what was the motivation for the people in those days to build such a detailed architecture. But acquiring an ability to riff at each destination was very hard for an amateurish and dull guide like me. That’s why I ordered the newly published book. The book consists of 6 chapters as below:
1) The Beginning of Japanese History (From Jomon to Heian period)
2) The era that Bushi (men of the sword) gained power and took active parts (From the Genpei war to Muromachi period)
3) From the era of rivalry of powerful leaders to unification of the whole country (From the period of warring states to Azuchi-Momoyama period)
4) Peaceful Era administrated by the Tokugawa Shogunate (Edo period)
5) From the Meiji Restoration to today
6) Japanese history by Important Themes such as Religion, Relationships with Korea and China so on
It is obvious for this slow boy not to be able to memorize even the landmark years, but I felt I might have managed to catch the larger flow of the history a little bit.
The next homework for me is to give another textbook for high school a once-over, in order to fix the knowledge into my rusty brain, if only a little.
PS: Just 9 years have already passed today since I retired from the old company.

タイトル：訪日観光客向けツアーガイドに必要な日本史の基礎知識
退職後、私は７０回以上ガイドをしてきたでしょうか。最初は、目的地に着くだけで焦りまくるくらいでしたので、観光地に関連する日本史に触れる余裕は全くありませんでした（私はとてもお粗末なガイドでした！）。しかし、目的地の歴史的背景を少し加えるだけで、お客様にその場所に対する印象が豊かになることに徐々に気づきました。ここで重要なのは、必ずしも詳細な内容ではなく、歴史の流れ、例えば、なぜそのような洗練された文化が育まれたのか、当時の人々はどのような動機でそのような手の込んだ建築物を建てたのか、といったようなことです。しかし、私のような不器用で鈍いガイドにとっては、それぞれの場所で即興的に気の利いた話ができるようになるのはとても困難なことでした。そこで、新刊のこの本を注文したのです。本書は以下の６つの章から構成されています。
1) 日本の歴史の幕開け（縄文時代から平安時代まで）
2) 武士が躍動した時代（源平合戦から室町時代まで）
3) 群雄割拠から天下統一へ（戦国時代から安土桃山時代まで）
4) 徳川幕府が治めた泰平の世（江戸時代）
5) 明治維新から現代まで
6) 宗教、朝鮮・中国との関係など、重要なテーマで知る日本の歴史
私のような鈍い人間が、歴史的に重要な年代さえも暗記できるはずもないのは明らかですが、歴史の大きな流れについては少しは掴めたような気がします。
さて、次の課題は、同時に買った高校の日本史参考書をざっと斜め読み直して、錆びついた頭に少しでも知識を定着させることになります。
追記：私が前の会社を退職してから、今日でちょうど９年が経ちました。
