Tomorrow (Mar. 20) is the spring equinox day this year.
Buddhists in Japan have a custom to visit their ancestors’ grave in an equinoctial week. This is because they believe that the spirits of ancestors return to this world in this week.
I went to our family grave this afternoon for cleaning around it, offering flowers, burning incense in front of the gravestone and thanking for our ancestors’ daily protection.
Some might say “That is surely a good behavior, but you cannot always get a good fortune even if you do the seasonal deed earnestly.”
But I have a bit different opinion from my small experiences so far. That was in the middle of June 2 years ago when it was in the midst of long rainy season in Japan. I was lucky enough to be assigned for the first time as a tour guide around my hometown area by a bike tour. The problem I worried was the day’s weather. When it rains on that day, everything would be ruined. I had visited to the grave every day in order to pray the day’s good weather. As the result, it MIRACUROUSLY became a perfectly fine day on that day! All the guests were able to fully enjoy the Kohoku tour. (*^^)v
Since then, I’ve become a “very good boy” to report our latest events including my families and pray for our health too, in front of our ancestors.

日本の仏教徒は、春分の週に先祖の墓参りをする習慣があります。これは、先祖の霊がこの週にこの世に戻ってくると信じられているためです。
私は今日の午後、ご先祖の墓参りに行って墓の周りを掃除し、花を供え、墓石の前で線香を焚いて先祖の日々のご守護へ感謝いたしました。
「それは確かに良い行いだが、その季節の行いを真面目に行っても必ずしも幸運が訪れるとは限らないよ」と言う人もいるかもしれません。
しかし、自身のささやかな経験から、私は少し違った考えを持っています。それは２年前の６月中旬、梅雨の真っ只中のことでした。私は幸運にも、初めて自転車ツアーで地元周辺のツアーガイドを任されました。私が心配していたのは、その日の天気でした。もし雨が降ったら、すべてが台無しになってしまうからです。毎日お墓参りをして、その日の天気を祈願していました。すると、なんとその日は奇跡的に快晴になったんです！おかげで、参加者の皆さんはこの湖北ツアーを存分に楽しんでいただくことができました。(*^^)v
それ以来、私は先祖の前で家族の近況報告をしたり、健康を祈願したりする「とても良い子」になりました。
