Aonishiki (安青錦)Sumo wrestler won the grand tournament in Kyusyu on Nov. 24. At the ceremony, this young wrestler from Ukraine replied in Japanese very fluently for the interview. They say he could speak nothing in Japanese when he came to Japan 3 years ago. How fast he mastered the foreign language! Not only the case of Aonishiki but also, I’ve often been astonished to see some became such good speakers of other language in such a short time. By contrast, I’m depressed to know that I’m still in a very low-level speaking, listening and writing even the internationally well-known language, English.

The author of the book was known for the “God of a simultaneous interpretation”. In this book, Kunihiro advocate a very simple learning technique for English. This method is called “SHIKAN RODOKU” (只管朗読) in Japanese; to read aloud repeatedly English sentences that one has already understood the meaning. How many times do we have to read? Until you can recite all the sentences!
One more thing the God emphasizes was the importance of Grammer. Not half-way and the shallow knowledge about it but we have to soak the concept into our brain through many examples.

So, after reading the book, I planned to continue reading aloud example sentences in the textbooks about English grammar that I learned in high school days. That must be also a good opportunity for me to review the basics of the grammar again and fix them firmly, which may have been a bit ambiguous for this slow boy.
I already withdrew the 3 old textbooks from the book shelve for the preparation. Now, I’ll be a high school pupil again from tomorrow!

安青錦（あおにしき）関がさる１１月２３日（日）、九州場所で優勝しました。式典で、ウクライナ出身のこの若き力士はインタビューにとても流暢な日本語で受け答えしていました。３年前に来日した時は日本語が全く話せなかったそうです。なんと早く外国語をマスターしたのでしょう！安青錦関に限らず、他の言語を短期間でこれほど上手に話せる人がいるのには驚かされます。それとは対照的に、私は国際的によく知られている言語である英語でさえ、話す、聞く、書くといった能力が未だに非常に低いレベルであることに落胆しています。

本書の著者は「同時通訳の神様」として知られていました。本書の中で、國弘氏は非常にシンプルな英語学習法を提唱しています。これは日本語で「只管朗読」（しかんろうどく）と呼ばれているもので、意味を理解している英語の文章を繰り返し声に出して読む方法です。一体何回読めばいいのでしょうか？すべての文章を暗唱できるようになるまでです！
この神様がもう一つ強調していたのは、文法の重要性です。中途半端な知識や浅い知識ではなく、たくさんの例を通してこの概念を脳に染み込ませる必要があるのです。

そこで、この本を読んだ後、高校時代に習った英文法の教科書の例文を音読し続けてみることにしました。これは、頭の鈍い私にとって曖昧だったかもしれない文法の基礎をもう一度復習し、しっかりと定着させる良い機会にもなるはずです。
その準備のために、すでに本棚から３冊の古い教科書を取り出しました。さあ、明日からまた高校生です！
