Since it’s been heavily snowing since the last few days ago, I couldn’t go out for my daily exercise. Instead, by taking advantage of my vacant time in my room, I read the books I borrowed from the city library. The books were about English reading from a practical point of view. One is for enhancing reading skills of logical sentences such as news articles, thesis, SNS and novels. Another one is for catching points to improve listening skills after mastering afore-mentioned reading ability.
When I started reading the first one, I tried to answer a quiz to check if I have a required level to read the book, but the result was terrible. I was not able to understand what the quiz sentence (see Note) meant very well even after spending 10 minutes. (Shocked to realize that I still have a long way to reach the satisfactory level…( ;∀;)
The second book was kind enough to provide us with a QR code by which a reader can listen a model example with our mobile phones. Since I thought it was very hard for me to listen to it without any prior information, I read the sentences first and tried to listen. Even so, my understanding level was only 60-70%. I was shocked again to know I could be better….
Looking back, I’ve read many books about English. If I could have acquired even half of the knowledge and technique from these books, my level might have progressed a bit, but I’m sorry I couldn’t, due to my dull brain. One more thing I have to add is that we need to use the acquired knowledge and secrets from the books actively, if not, these must vanish as time passes.
I now renew my awareness about studying English. As a tour guide for inbound tourists, I have to make an effort so as to reach the goal that my clients from abroad misunderstand that I am a native speaker of English!

ここ数日大雪が降り続けているため、日課としている運動のために外出することができません。その代わり、自室で空いた時間を利用して、市立図書館から借りてきた本を読みました。その本は、実践的な観点から「英語の読み方」について書かれた本です。1冊目は、ニュース記事、論文、SNS、小説などの論理的な文章の読解力を高めるための本です。もう1冊は、読解力を身につけた上で、リスニング力（聞き取り能力）を高めるためのポイントを押さえるための本でした。
1冊目を読み始めたとき、自分がその本を読むのに必要なレベルに達しているかを確認するためにクイズに答えようとしましたが、その結果はひどいものでした。１０分かけてもクイズの文章(英文の[Note]参照)の意味がよくわかりませんでした。私は、まだまだ満足できるレベルには程遠いと気づきショックでした( ;∀;) ）
2冊目の本には、QRコードが付いていて、携帯で模範文書例を聞くことができました。何も事前の情報がない状態で聞くのは大変だと思いましたので、まずは文章を読んで聞いてみました。それでも、理解度は６０～７０％程度でした。（私の能力は）まだまだだと知り、またショックを受けました… ( ;∀;)
今振り返ってみると、私は英語に関する本をたくさん読んできました。これらの本から知識やテクニックを半分でも習得できていたならば、ひょっとしたら私のレベルは多少とも向上していたかもしれませんが、鈍い頭のせいでできなかったのは残念です。もう1つ付け加えておきたいのは、本から得た知識や秘訣はこれらを積極的に活用しなければ、時間が経つにつれて消えてしまうということです。
英語の勉強について、今回改めて意識が新たになりました。訪日観光客向けのツアーガイドとして海外からのお客様から「こいつの英語はまるで母国語で話しているようだ」と勘違いしてもらえるレベルに達するように努力しなくてはいけません！
