Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion) is one of the most popular spots for inbound tourists, too. When I did a tour guiding for an American couple in last Oct., I touched the topic to the guests, “The temple was originally built by the third shogun Yoshimitsu ASHIKAGA in 1398. but it was burned down relatively recently by an arsonist, who was a young priest of that temple.”

This small comment attracted the gentleman’s curiosity. “What? Why did he commit such an awful crime?” I was not able to reply to his pertinent question, and just commented, “The story was written by the novel by Yukio MISHIMA, who was once nominated for a candidate of the Nobel Prize in literature. The version in English must have been published.”

Honestly, I haven’t read the novel before, so I borrowed the book at a public library the other day, and completed reading it today. The story was written in the form of the single priest’s profession. It was very dense for me. I tried to understand why the young, handicapped Buddhist monk who once had seemed to have a bright future did it, but cannot find the convincing answer still now.

タイトル: 三島由紀夫作　「金閣寺」

「金閣寺」は海外からの観光客にも人気のスポットのひとつです。さる10月にアメリカ人ご夫婦のツアーガイドをした際、このゲストへ「このお寺は1398年に足利三代将軍の義満によって建立されたのですが、比較的最近（1950年；昭和25年）、放火犯によって焼失してしまいました。その犯人はこのお寺の若い修行僧でした」という話題に触れました。

このささやかなコメントは、ゲストのご主人の好奇心をとても惹きつけたようです。「え？　なぜ彼はそんなひどい罪を犯したんだい？」私はこのもっともなご質問に答えることができませんでした。ただ、（何か回答せねばならないので）「その背景や青年僧の心境は、かつてノーベル文学賞候補にも挙げられた三島由紀夫の小説に記されていたと思います。たしか、英語版も出版されているはずだと思います」とコメントいたしました。

実は私自身、この小説は読んだことがありませんでした。そこで、先日最寄りの図書館で借りて今日読み終わりました。この物語は、僧が心境を告白する形で書かれています。しかし、私にとってはとても難解なものでした。私は、かつては将来が約束されているようにも見えた、多少障害があるこの若い僧侶がなぜそんなことをしたのか理解しようと努めましたが、今でも納得のいく答えは見つけられておりません。
