I got weepy when I was watching this year’s last program of “Bake Bake (ばけばけ)”, the NHK’s popular morning drama. I have a feeling that new stage will happen in the latter half of the darama from the next year.
The main characters of the drama are Lafcadio Hearn (1850 – 1904) and his wife Setsu. Hearn was a Greek and Irish writer, translator, and teacher who introduced the culture and literature of Japan to the Western world, according to Wikipedia.
Hearn’s novels, especially “Kwaidans” (Ghost Stories) have been often cited in English textbooks for junior high school. I had a small experience to “listen” his book through NHK’s radio program in 2014. Since I was so impressed with the story and the story tellers in it, I have kept the file in my PC. It may be a bit staticky and hard for listening, but I can recommend you to try listening. The title, the ending and the priest’s words of the novel has remained strong in my heart.

NHKの人気朝ドラ「ばけばけ」の今年最後の回を今朝見て、涙ぐんでしまいました。来年からは、ドラマの後半で新たな展開が待っているような気がします。
このドラマの主人公は、ラフカディオ・ハーン（1850年 – 1904年）と妻のセツです。Wikipediaによると、ハーンはギリシャとアイルランド出身の作家、翻訳家、そして教師で、日本の文化と文学を西洋に紹介しました。
ハーンの小説、特に「怪談」は、中学校の英語の教科書によく登場してきています。私は、2014年にNHKのラジオ番組で彼の本を「聴く」という小さな体験をしました。物語（ストーリー）と語り手にとても感銘を受けたので、その音声ファイルをパソコンに保存しておりました。少し雑音が入っていて聞きづらいかもしれませんが、ぜひ聴いてみてください。タイトル、結末、そして禅寺の檀寺の大玄和尚の言葉が心に深く残っています。
