Ancient documents say that Sugawara Michizane (菅原道真公), one of the most famous historical heroes in Heian period was born at our small hamlet in KOHOKU area (the northern district of Shiga pref.) And we were often told from our childhood that the great person was a child between Ten-nyo (天女), a women who was said to live in heaven, and Kirihata Dayu (桐畑太夫), a big figure at around here.
Regarding this legend, an article titled “Trees associated with a shrine of Michizane” in a community paper was published today. Almost all people may think that the story is just an absurd story, but we can’t necessarily laugh the matter off, since there still remains some circumstantial evidence.
1) Our village shrine is called Kitano Shrine, which may have come from Kitano Grand Shrine in Kyoto enshrining Michizane
2) The Ten-nyo and the willow tree on which the beautiful woman hung her clothes when she bathed at the lake are engraved on the bell at our shrine
3) There is a shrine called “Ohmi Tenmangu” (近江天満宮) near our hamlet, which used to be one of the big ones in olden days, and is said that Michizane led an ascetic life there.
4) Besides the above, we have some other stories associated Michizane and a house of his “father” here at my home area.
5) That’s why we have still kept the Shinto ritual called “Tenjinko” (天神講) every year on Feb. 25, a death anniversary day of the Genius.

タイトル：私の故郷は伝説が現代に生きる村です
古文書には、平安時代の最も有名な歴史的英雄の一人、菅原道真公が湖北地域（滋賀県北部）の小さな村で生まれたと記載されています。そして私たちは子供の頃から、その偉人は天に住むと言われている天女と、このあたりの偉人であった桐畑太夫との間に生まれた子供であるとよく言われてきました。
この伝説について、本日地域紙に「天神様の神社にちなむ木」という記事が掲載されました。ほとんどの人は荒唐無稽な話だと思うかもしれませんが、昔から語り継がれた話も残っているのであながち笑い飛ばすことできないと思います。
1) 私たちの村の神社は北野神社と呼ばれています。これは、道真公を祀る京都の北野天満宮に由来すると言われています。
2) 私たちの神社の鐘には、天女と、美しい女性が湖で沐浴をする際に衣を掛けた柳の木が彫られています。
3) 私たちの村の近くには「近江天満宮」という神社があります。かつては大きな神社の一つで、道真公がそこで修行を積んだと言われています。
4) 上記の他にも、私の故郷には道真公と彼の「父」が住んでいた家にまつわる伝説がいくつかあります。
5) そのため、私たちは今でも毎年2月25日の道真公の命日に「天神講」という神事を執り行っています。
