My hometown area, KOHOKU, i.e., the norther region of Lake Biwa, is well-known as the “Home of Kannon”. Here, “Kannon” is a revered Buddhist figure on the path to enlightenment of compassion and mercy, worshiped in Buddhism across Eastern and Southern Asia. It is believed that the main reason why so many Kannon statues have been concentrated here was geographically influenced by the 2 “Sangaku-shinko faiths” (Mountain worship) of “Hakusan worship” in Hokuriku district and the Tendai sect of Buddhism originated from Mt. Hiei.
Many Kannon statues were sculptured in Heian period (8 – 12 century) by historically famous monks such as Gyogi, Kukai, Taicho when these great figures were engaged in missionary works in various places of mountainous district of the north of Ohmi (currently, Shiga pref.)
The Festa becomes the 41st event this year. Since I’ve wanted to be a guide for inbound tourists around my hometown area, I had applied the prior reservations for the study tours (totally 7 courses), but I was sorry to hear that all the reservations had been immediately sold out. So, I participated in the cyclic bus excursion, instead. (I found it much better than the expensive and fixed bus tours after all, since I was able to drop by at my favorite old temples and spend my own time there freely without being annoyed at the time.)
In the Festa this year, I selected visiting around the northern course.
The temples that I could visit were as follows.
1)An-nen-ji temple (Founded in the early 8th century)
2) Kuroda Kannon-ji temple (Founded in the early 8th century)
3) Daitaku-ji temple (Founded in the early 8th century)
4) Oto Senjyu-do temple (Founded in the late 8th century)
5) Shakugo-ji temple (Founded in the early 9th century)
6) Cho-mei-ji temple (Founded in the late 12th century)
7) Reisui-ji temple (Founded in the 10th century)
8) Kogen-ji temple (Founded in the early 8th century)
What almost all of these Kannons in KOHOKU have in common, was that they had a “furnace”, when Shibata Katsuie attacked the small but long-established temples when the war of Shizugatake occurred in 1583. They say that village people in those days hid the statues into the ground and saved.
I thought the event held at idyllic countryside hamlets in the midst of autumnal scenery is really worth visiting. There is nothing luxurious look at all when you see these statues, but you cannot help but feel a kind of genuine and honest faith by the people there respecting the gods since more than 1,200 years ago, I bet!

第41回観音の里ふるさとまつり
私の故郷である湖北、つまり琵琶湖の北部地方は、「観音様のふるさと」として広く知られています。ここで観音様とは、慈悲の悟りへの道を歩む仏様であり、東アジアや南アジア各地の仏教において信仰されています。この地域に何故これほど多くの観音像が集中しているのかは、北陸地方の「白山信仰」と比叡山を起源とする天台宗という二つの山岳信仰の影響を受けた地理的背景が大きいと考えられています。
平安時代（8～12世紀）には、行基、空海、泰澄といった歴史上名高い僧侶たちが近江（現在の滋賀県）北部の山間部にて布教活動を行った際に、多くの観音像が彫られました。
このおまつりは今年で41回目となります。私は、以前から地元周辺でインバウンド観光客向けのガイドをしたいと考えておりましたので、周遊バスツアー（全7コース）の事前予約を申し込んでいたのですが、残念ながらすぐに満席になってしまい、代わりに巡回バスツアーへ参加いたしました。（結局、高額な観音めぐり周遊バスツアーよりも、自由に好きなお寺に立ち寄ることができかつ気兼ねなく自分の時間を過ごすことができたので、結果としてとても良かったです。）
今年のおまつりでは、北側の巡回コースを選びました。
私が訪れた寺院は以下の８つでした。
1) 安念寺（8世紀初頭創建）
2) 黒田観音寺（8世紀初頭創建）
3) 大澤寺（8世紀初頭創建）
4) 大音千手堂（8世紀後半創建）
5) 赤後寺（9世紀初頭創建）
6) 長命寺（12世紀後半創建）
7) 冷水寺（10世紀創建）
8) 向源寺（8世紀初頭創建）
湖北のこれらの観音寺のほとんどに共通することは、過去に「過酷な試練」があったことです。即ち、1583年の賤ヶ岳の戦いで、柴田勝家が小規模ながらも由緒あるこれらの寺院を焼き討ちした際に、当時の村人たちは観音像を地中に埋めて隠したと伝えられています。
秋の風景に囲まれた、のどかな田園地帯で行われるこのイベントは、本当に訪れる価値があるものと思いました。これらの観音像を見ると、決して豪華な見た目ではありませんが1200年以上もの昔から仏像を敬い、そこに暮らす人々の真摯で誠実な信仰心を感じずにはおられません。
