“Bura Tamori” is a popular NHK’s program, in which a “Well-informed” comedian Tamori strolled Japan’s city or area with professional or amateur geologists, local historians or curators, and explored the place’s terrain features and geological changes, as well as its history, culture and civil engineering. The theme of last evening was Sanjyusangendo temple. Since I’ve guided inbound tourists countless times to the spot, I watched the program with keen interest. As a result, I was able to acquire a lot of valuable knowledge for the first time about the must-see destination in the ancient capital. Below are some examples. (Random order)
1) Great South Gate
The gate is just outside of the precinct, but it was the gate for the Big Buddha in Kyo, which was built by Hideyoshi. (Near Hokoku Shrine, there is no Buddha statue there due to the fire.)
2) Taiko Bei (The earthen wall reportedly built by Taiko)
The southern fence gate was not donated by Hideyoshi nor Hideyori, but actually Ieyasu.
3) Toshiya
If we closely watch the western corridor which is outside of the main hall, we can see an arrow through the balk. They say they intentionally left it so we can recall the competition in those days.
4) The Thousand-Armed Deity just behind the Principal Image
Only that deity is displayed not on the visitors’ route but on the backside. That was the last deity curved in Muromachi period.
5) The modern fire prevention system
The temple encountered a big fire in 1164, and many statues were burned down then. Since all the 1032 Buddhist statues here are the national treasures, they now equipped and installed the perfect system along the eastern area along the stroll-style garden.
This knowledge has not been necessarily well-known, but I think it a very interesting topics for inbound tourists, too.

The time-expanded program this time was really informative for this amateurish tour guide. I have to bear the new information firmly in my mind so I can bring it up for my guests from the next.

タイトル：９月２０日放送の「ブラタモリ」のテーマは三十三間堂でした。

「ブラタモリ」は、NHKの人気番組で、何にでも博識のタモリがプロやアマチュアの地質学者、郷土史家、学芸員等とともに国内の街や地域を散策し、地形や地質の変化、歴史、文化、土木工学などを探究する番組です。先日のテーマは三十三間堂でした。私はこれまで何度もここへ海外観光客を案内してきたので、今回の番組をたいへん関心深く見ました。その結果、古都の必見スポットであるこの三十三間堂について、私にとって初めて知る貴重な知識をたくさん得ることができました。以下にいくつか例を挙げます。（順不同）
1) 南大門
境内から少し外れたところにある門ですが、秀吉が建立した京大仏の門でした。（豊国神社付近；火災にあったので、現在は跡地のみ残っています）
2) 太閤塀（太閤が築いたと伝えられる土塀；重文）
この南側の塀は秀吉や秀頼ではなく、家康が寄進したものとのことでした。
3) 通し矢
本堂の外にある西側の回廊をよく見ると、棟に通じる垂木に矢が刺さっています。これは当時の争奪戦を偲ばせるため、意図的に残されたと言われています。
4) 本尊裏の千手観音（室町観音）
この千手観音だけは参拝通路ではなく裏側に安置されています。室町時代に最後に作られた千手観音像です。
5) 近代的な防火対策
1164年に大火に見舞われ、多くの仏像が焼失しました。国宝に指定されている1032体の仏像を守るため東回り庭園には、万全の防火対策が施されています。

これらの知識は必ずしも広く知られていませんでしたが、インバウンド観光客にとっても興味深いトピックだと思います。
