In Kohoku area (Northern Region of Lake Biwa), we have the traditional Shinto Ritual for praying huge harvests in this late Feb. (usually Feb. 25) from old years. The ritual is often called “OKONAI”, but we also call it “Tenjin-ko” in our village, which comes from Sugawara-no-Michizane (菅原道真; 845 – 903), who is well known as a splendid scholar, politician, nobleman, and poet. Some say that the ritual day comes from the great figure’s death day in the old calendar. But why have we continued this tradition in our hamlet? This is because our old legend told us that MIchizane was our ancestor! The rumor is not necessarily far from the truth, since we have other legends that a smart boy was born between our ancestor living near Lake Yogo and Tennyo (heavenly maiden). The boy was found out his rare intelligence and talent by Sugawara-no-Koreyoshi (菅原是善), a high ranked nobleman, when the boy was left at Kanzan-ji temple (菅山寺), which still exists. The boy was then adopted to Koreyoshi’s family after all and climbed up the ladder of success in Kyoto.
Therefore, Michizane has been enshrined at our village shrine called “Kitano Shrine”, which must’ve been named after “Kitano Tenmangu Shrine” in Kyoto, the general headquarters enshrining Michizane.
The main event of the day is that a selected man lifts a large rice cake onto his back and carries it to the shrine chamber. It was unfortunately raining all day today, but the ritual was accomplished as scheduled thanks to all the duty group members.
Now, spring is just around the corner, as this unique event was over.

タイトル: 故郷の神事「天神講」
湖北地方（びわ湖の北部）では、2月下旬（例年2月25日）に五穀豊穣を祈る伝統的な神事が古くから行われています。 この儀式は「OKONAI」（おこない）と呼ばれることが多いですが、私たちの村では「天神講」とも呼んでいます。これは、優れた学者、政治家、貴族、詩人としてよく知られている菅原道真（845年～903年）に由来しています。 この儀式の日は、旧暦の偉人の命日から来ているという説もあります。 しかし、なぜ私たちの村ではこの伝統が続いているのでしょうか？ 古い言い伝えでは、それは道真が私たちの先祖であるとされていたからです。 余呉湖の近くに住む先祖と天女との間に賢い男の子が生まれたという伝説もあり、この噂は必ずしも真実とかけ離れているわけではありません。 この少年は、（現存している）菅山寺というお寺に預けられていた時にその類稀な知性と才能を高位の貴族である菅原是善に見出されました。 結局、その少年は是善の養子となり、京の都で出世の階段を上っていくことになったのです。
それゆえ、道真公は、我々の村神社（北野神社）の神様として祀られることになったのです。そして、この神社は道真を祀る総本社である京都の「北野天満宮」にちなんで名づけられたに違いないと考えられます。
この日のメインイベントは、選ばれた男性が大きな餅を背負って神社本殿まで運ぶことです。 本日は１日中あいにくの雨が降っていましたが、当番講の皆様のおかげ様で予定通り神事を終えることができました。
このユニークな神事も終わりましたので、春はもうすぐそこまで来ています。
