Since it continued snowing outside all day long, I spent reading the book by taking advantage of my free time yesterday. (I bought it several years ago but had not even touched it yet at all.)
I started reading it not in assertive way but just wanting to finish it anyway, because I thought it wasteful if I just keep it sleep in the bookshelf.
The author is now actively working as a general manager at Microsoft Corp. Singapore. But, he said, he had once seen the hell when he changed his job to a global company, though he had been admitted in Japan that he was a very able businessperson who could do a business with English better than others. He couldn’t speak and listen English at the company, he couldn’t join in their conversation at all, he did speak nothing at a meeting and then was told from his boss that he was not worthy to be a member of the office. He became psychogenic autonomic imbalance. And he wondered, “Why can other staffs do well with their business, though they are non-native speakers, either. And found at last that there are 2 “absolute rules” for business English as below.
1) To use phrases (that are suitable for the situation) very often
2) To try to speak in positive and polite manner
After completing the book, I thought it might be sure to earn some respect from colleagues in one year if we work every day in such a global company, always taking into consideration these 550 phrases.
I’ve already retired from an office and now an easy-going tour guide for inbound tourists (only several days a month when I wish), but I guessed some of the phrases here could also be used in my job too in order to enrich and enjoy our communication with each other.

I’ve made it a rule to leave a memorandum record after reading a book in order to recall the points that I was impressed.

特段積極的だったわけではなく、とにかく早くに始末したいと思っただけで読み始めました。本棚に眠らせておくのはもったいないと思ったからです。
著者は現在、マイクロソフト・シンガポールでゼネラルマネージャーとして活躍しています。しかし、かつて彼は日本では英語でビジネスができる優秀なビジネスマンだと皆から認められていたにもかかわらず、グローバル企業に転職したときには地獄を見たことがあるそうです。会社では英語を話すことも聞くこともできず、会話に加わることができず、会議でも何も発言できず、上司から「あなたは会社の一員としてふさわしくない」と言われたそうです。彼は心因性自律神経失調症を患ってしまい、「なぜ他のスタッフは非ネイティブなのに、仕事がうまくいっているのだろう？」と疑問に思いました。そしてついに、ビジネス英語には以下の2つの「絶対ルール」があることに気付きました。
1) 状況に合ったフレーズを多用する
2) ポジティブで丁寧な話し方を心がける
この本を読み終えた後、グローバル企業で毎日働きながら、これら550のフレーズを常に意識していれば、なるほど1年後には同僚から尊敬されるようになるだろうと思いました。
私はすでにサラリーマンを退職し、現在はインバウンド観光客向けの気楽なツアーガイドをしています（月に数日、気が向いた時に）。しかし、ここに載っているフレーズのいくつかは、私の仕事にも活かせるかもしれないと思いました。そうすれば、お互いのコミュニケーションをより豊かに、そしてより楽しくすることができるでしょう。

私は本を読んだ後は印象に残った点を忘れないように、必ずメモを残すようにしています。
