It’s still hot in middays but I somehow feel fall has been approaching a bit. After a small job, I went out this afternoon by a bike to my neighboring town where I sometimes visited in my childhood. It was an unplanned trip…. I dropped by a small village shrine and old houses where no one have lived for a long time, and suddenly found some ruin that is ivy-covered. It seems to me that it must have been some important building like a school or a public office, which, however, cannot be thought to be a perfect setting for such a lonely countryside. There seems to have been some entrance gate, but there were no traces that shows what the building used to be.
I became very curious about what it used to be, when I found an old farmer who was just doing an agricultural work. I asked the friendly gentleman, “Excuse me, but what is that old ruin over there?” The kind man replied.
1) That used to be a telephone switching station, where many switchboard operators (all women) were working. But the station had closed the door more than 60 years ago.
2) Someone bought the building and had used it until recently, but it has stopped too, now.
3) They leave it still now, since the landscape covered with red-colored ivy becomes so pretty in fall.
The kind answer was very satisfactory for me.
When I was biking to my home, I passed by an old station ruin, the name of which was “Nakanogo”, one of the most important sta. connecting Nagahama and Tsuruga, an international port city in Fukui pref. on the Yanagase line.
There are not any traces around there that reminds us of the prosperity 140 years ago, but I still remember that I got on a SL train at the sta. being taken by my young mom.

タイトル：郷愁を誘う廃墟と道
日中はまだまだ暑いですが、どことなく秋が少し近づいてきた気がします。今日の午後、私はちょっとした用事を済ませた後、子供の頃に時々訪れていた隣町へ自転車で出かけてみました。特段、目的地があるわけでもないサイクリングでした…。村の小さな神社や、長い間誰も住んでいないように見える古い家々に立ち寄っていたとき、フト、蔦が絡まっている”廃墟”に遭遇いたしました。一見したところかつては学校や役所など、何か重要な建物だったようなのですが、こんな片田舎にふさわしい場所とは思えませんでした。入り口の門があったようですが、建物が何だったのかを示す痕跡は（片づけられたらしく）ありませんでした。
私は、それが何だったのかとても気になってきました。そこで、農作業をされていたご年配の男性を見つけたので、その紳士に「ちょっとお尋ねしますが、あそこの廃墟は何だったのですか？」と尋ねてみました。親切な男の人はこう答えてくれました。
1) あそこはかつて（昔の）電話交換局で、多くの交換手（全員女性）が働いていたんだよ。しかし、もう6０年以上前に（時代の流れにより）閉鎖されてしまったんだ。
2) 誰かがあの建物を購入して（何かの目的のため）ごく最近まで使用していたようだが、今ではそれもなくなったようだ。
3) しかし、秋になると、まとわりついたツタが赤く染まる景色がとてもきれいになるので、今もそのままにしているようだ。
私は、その解説にとても納得することができました。
その後、自転車で家に向かっているとき、「旧柳ヶ瀬線」で長浜と福井県の国際港湾都市敦賀を結ぶ最も重要な駅の一つ、「中之郷」という古い駅の跡を通りました。
今から１４０年も前の繁栄を偲ばせる痕跡はそこにはもう何もありませんが、私は今でもまだ若かった母に連れられてその駅からSL列車に乗ったことを思い出しました。
